AL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR (Update)

By Muntradamus

BEAST DOME NATION.

For those do not know, my finger has been hovering over the AL Rookie of the Year for the past few years when I started to go hard in the paint with the Prop.

Few years ago I Rocked the Casas with Triston Casas, who just came short to Gunnar Henderson.

Last season I was robbed with Austin Wells as they gave it to Luis Gil.

This year, I went in on Jasson Dominguez +300 with Cam Smith +3440 as the backup plan.

With more than half of the season complete. There is still hope alive.

Jacob Wilson is leading the way, but it is an artificial lead. Jacob was screeching hot to start the year he was hitting near .370 at one point of the season, now he sits at .332 with 9 HRs which is okay, but only 2 HR in June and 2 HR in April, if he has another poor month of power, that batting average alone will not win him Rookie of the Year. Also have to remember the Athletics are in Last Place and not making the playoffs.

Nick Kurtz in my mind should be favored more than Jacob Wilson. Kurtz has 17 HRs this year and hitting .257 (which is like impressive these days). Kurtz also was a late season call up. Kurtz has 5 HRs in May. 7 HRs in June, and currently 5 HRs in July. Kurtz could easily end up with 30 HRs if he continues this pace which makes me believe, he is the favorite between him and Jacob Wilson.

The two Red Sox in Roman Anthony and Carlos Narvaez are not scary threats in my eyes. Roman Anthony is not really doing that much in the majors 2 HR/2 SB hitting .264, please name alone is not going to get him this trophy. Carlos Narvaez on the other hand is looking like a really strong catcher in the future, but 8 HR/31 RBI hitting .273 is not going to wow anyone. We already saw last year nobody cares if you play catcher, just ask Austin Wells.

Then you have the two BEAST DOME Legends.

Cam Smith is in a good position to win this award, at least Vegas says. He is hitting in the heart of the Astros lineup, a team in 1st Place by 100 games in the AL West. 7 HR/40 RBI and hitting .277, wait why is he second in voting? He will be lucky to match Kurtz 17 HRs at this point, and Kurtz will keep going forward. Not sure why Vegas loves Cam Smith so much, he is solid and is playing a lot better after a slow start, but he has a loooong way to go before he can safely be a favorite for AL Rookie of the Year.

Jasson Dominguez on the other hand. The man with a 6 figure sports card, he is not playing like ‘The Martian’ he was nicknamed to be. Sure he has had some epic games, a 3 HR game, a 2 HR game, but all together he only has 8 HRs this year. That means in 78 games this year he only has 3 HRs if you take out those big games. Not good at all. What is saving him is his 14 SB and hitting .266 is not horrible. If Jasson Dominguez can find the power stroke and somehow end up with 15 HR/30 SB, there is a glimmer of hope. However Jasson has to get HOT fast.

At the end of the day, I am leaning towards Nick Kurtz winning this award unfortunately. The public really loves Jacob Wilson, he was the starting shortstop in the All-Star game which I am sure helps the resume when it comes time to voting, but Nick Kurtz is nothing short of PURE power. Either Jasson Dominguez has to get HOT to make a run for the money, or Cam Smith needs to step up his game, and voting has to consider the Astros are in 1st Place. Otherwise it looks like I have a losing season. I was able to snag Cam Smith at +3440, not bad considering he is now +165.
