WAR ON MURAKAMI (Vol. V)

If you are new to BEAST DOME, we have been following the AL Rookie of the Year award as I told everyone to BUY Murakami AL ROY shares in early July when Murakami was returning from his hamstring injury, many sites were offering +700. As we approach the last 1.5 weeks of August, let us look where we stand in the battle of Munetaka Murakami vs. Kevin McGonigle aka McSingle.

Despite playing 30+ less games because of a hamstring injury for Murakami, he is among the AL leaders in HR/SLG/OPS, and probably would be leading the MLB in HRs. Since the history of time, Baseball stats have been determined by the main objective facts. A hit is a hit, a RBI is a RBI, a HR is a HR. etc. We were able to judge how good a player was based off of these stats. In the 1980s sabermetrics were born, and they created a category called WAR. Nobody cared, to me it was just a baseball nerd stat, the game was determined on the real stats that matter. In 2012 the MVP race between Mike Trout and Miggy Cabrera was really heating up, so to determine the debate, WAR was introduced into the conclusion to settle who the real winner is and became mainstream. In 2026, it now has become the most important statistic to all baseball fans.

WAR was created for the simple reason to answer this question.

“How many more wins is a specific player worth to their team compared to a freely available minor league or bench player?”

What I hate about WAR is that a position player like Mcsingle (SS/3B), has more value than a 1B option like Murakami. If Mcsingle gets a HR, it is worth more than a HR from Murakami, because of position scarcity. While sure I agree there are less hitting SS options than 1B options, at the end of the day the better performing hitter is the better performing hitter. There are always the unicorn SS options like Alex Rodriguez when he was on the Mariners in 2000 with 40+ HR/.300+ batting average, and if you really are a star like Zach Neto of the Angels, then you can perform with the best hitters at any position. WAR should be a background stat, not the #1 most important stat. Especially because it is subjective stat based on personal feelings, not objective to what is actually winning the real baseball game.

IF WAR was created to tell us how many more wins a specific player is worth to their team. Let us look at the Chicago White Sox last season. Dead last place, worst team in Baseball. If you wanted to make money betting on Baseball in 2025, just bet against the White Sox. In 2026, they are now a 1st place team! Biggest addition you ask? Yes, signing Munetaka Murakami has completely changed the offense. In 2025 the Tigers were a playoff team, in 2026 the Tigers are not going to make the playoffs. However McSingle is way more valuable than Murakami according to WAR.

The AL ROY Race has McSingle with a HUGE lead -610 odds. In fact, Murakami is now +1073 falling behind Parker Messick & McSingle in the AL ROY race, because you guessed it. WAR.

If Murakami does not win AL ROY, then MLB has lost the plot. IF by the end of September, Murakami ends up leading the 2025 last place White Sox to the 2026 Playoffs while hitting nearly 40 HRs despite missing 30+ games with a hamstring injury, which is far more impressive than two players who are playing dungeon and dragons with decent seasons, but most important missing the playoffs. Then we have to ask ourselves.

WAR. Huh. Ya. What is it good for?

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING
