Fantasy Football: The TD Vulture

You are watching your game on Sunday.  It is 1st and goal at the 5 as your RB just picked up 12 Yards on a nice run up the middle.  You wait for the next play to be called as you already are doing your TD dance.  But wait..Your RB is running off the field at a speed that makes you think he has more than enough energy to score from 5 yards out.  In comes a bruiser who what do you know…scores a 5 yard TD on the first play.

We have all been there before. I am here to point out who you can expect will be scoring all the goal line TDs for each team.

BEANIE WELLS – ARIZONA
FRED JACKSON – BUFFALO
MICHAEL TURNER – ATLANTA

*IF Tuner goes down, and JacQuizz proves he can handle the load and still be effective in the red zone (He can, and he will/scored in the red zone this preseason and has shown it throughout his career at Oregon).  Then JacQuizz could easily keep the every part of the field role eventually this season.

RAY RICE – BALTIMORE
CAM NEWTON – CAROLINA

*Every Panther RB including Tolbert will score a goal line TD this season.  I expect Cam to lead the bunch.

MICHAEL BUSH – CHICAGO

*Bush was a monster last season being a must-start option when McFadden went down.  Look for Bush to pull a similar role if Forte goes down, but at least be the goal line guy all season.

BENJARVUS GREEN-ELLIS – CINCINNATI

*The only thing he is really good for.

TRENT RICHARDSON – CLEVELAND
DEMARCO MURRAY – DALLAS
WILLIS MCGAHEE – DENVER
KEILAND WILLIAMS/MIKEL LESHOURE – DETROIT

*Leshoure is suspended the first three games, once he returns he will be the goal line guy.  Though Calvin Johnson is really their goal line guy as they just lob it up to him and it works about 80% of the time.  Calvin should come near 20 TDs this season, unless the Madden Curse comes true.

ARIAN FOSTER – HOUSTON

*Do not be surprised to see Ben Tate steal around 5 TDs from the goal line this season.  Foster will be sitting in the 4th quarter of huge blowouts as the Texans know they have the best backup RB in the NFL.  Think Boobie Miles from Friday Night Lights, and you have Ben Tate.

CEDRIC BENSON – GREEN BAY
DELONE CARTER – INDIANAPOLIS

*This is a questionable one because right now the Colts are a mess at the RB position. Between the rookie Vic Ballard, Donald  Brown, 3rd down specialist Mwelde Moore, and Carter. I would avoid the entire situation.

MAURICE-JONES DREW – JACKSONVILLE
PEYTON HILLIS – KANSAS CITY

*You are going to hate owning Jamaal Charles this season.  He will have the 100+ Total Yard games, but he will be pulled for a lot of TDs, and you will think of what could have been all week.  Until it happens all over again the next Sunday.

DANIEL THOMAS – MIAMI

*Reggie Bush is more than capable of scoring near the goal line.  Chances are Daniel Thomas will get a shot to see if he can handle the role just to keep Bush away from big hits.  If Bush goes down, the Dolphins will lose every game.  Thomas is the more physical back who the Dolphins do not care about taking the punishment.

ADRIAN PETERSON – MINNESOTA
STEVAN RIDLEY – NEW ENGLAND

*IF Ridley does not fumble this season, he will keep the job all 16 games.  Once he fumbles, his responsibilities will start to fade, he could lose goal line carries to rookie Brandon Bolden as one of his punishments.

CHRISTOPHER IVORY/MARK INGRAM/PIERRE THOMAS – N.O.

*Nobody has a clear hold of the job.  All three will be rotated for goal line TDs, and it would not be surprising at all to see Sproles get one or two this season.  I would avoid the entire situation.

D.J. WARE/AHMAD BRADSHAW – NEW YORK GIANTS

*This spot is up for grabs.  The Giants want to preserve Ahmad Bradshaw this season, and Ware can easily handle the responsibilities of being the old Brandon Jacobs.  I see Bradshaw getting the first shots at being the goal line guy, but he does not have a long leash.

SHONN GREENE – NEW YORK JETS
DARREN MCFADDEN – OAKLAND
LESEAN MCCOY – PHILADELPHIA
ISAAC REDMAN – PITTSBURGH

*Once Mendenhall returns, this situation will get messy.  For now expect Redman to get all the goal line touches.

JACKIE BATTLE – SAN DIEGO

*The dark horse that nobody is talking about.  I do not want my franchise RB to take hard hits near the goal line after having a collarbone injury in the preseason.  Especially when I have Jackie Battle who is 6’2/238 and looks like a LB.  Last season Battle ran for 70 Yards against the Chargers on Monday Night, and scored a goal line TD.

BRANDON JACOBS – SAN FRANCISCO

*Your modern day TJ Duckett.

MARSHAWN LYNCH – SEATTLE
STEVEN JACKSON – ST. LOUIS
DOUG MARTIN – TAMPA BAY

*I won’t say that Blount has no chance of being the goal line RB for Tampa Bay.  But it appears the Bucs are fine with letting him ride the pine all season long.  Preseason week 3, Doug Martin ran for a goal line TD.  Came to the sidelines where you see Blount moping with no helmet on sitting on the bench.

CHRIS JOHNSON – TENNESSEE
NO SET GUY – WASHINGTON

*Mike Shanahan will be shuffling the deck of RB cards like a black jack dealer all season long. If I had to pick one, it would easily be Roy Helu who proved to be great last season when healthy.
