FANTASY BASEBALL BUST
50 GALLEN’S OF BEER ON THE WALL
BEAST DOME NATION.
Pitching is an art. There are so many pitchers who are great one year, terrible the next. There are so many pitchers who are good for four years, but then terrible the next few, then completely forgotten.
Today we are going to analyze Zac Gallen. Someone nobody thought to even draft of last year, unless you were in a super deep league. Now is being drafted as the #15 Overall Pitcher!
Let us try to understand why. Usually when you draft a pitcher with a high pick, he needs to make an impact, not just blend in. Over 27 career starts, Gallen owns a 2.78 ERA, which is Hall of Fame worthy. Gallen also owns 178Ks in 158 INN, which is prime Clayton Kershaw worthy. The WHIP at 1.17 is dominant. So why any hate at all?
This is why I will not draft Zac Gallen
Let us look at the real situation here. Gallen has never pitched more than 72 INN in a season. Which was last year. He is 25 years old and the way managers are these days, there is ZERO chance Gallen will last 100 pitches in a game. Will he pitch the entire year? ZERO chance. The Arizona Diamondbacks have no chance to compete in the NL West with San Diego or Los Angeles. The NL East is filled with potential playoff teams like Atlanta/Washington/New York Mets. Arizona will be out of the playoff picture very early in the year. This means you will not be getting wins, nor a full season.
Don’t want to take my word for it. Here is Zac Gallen himself
While Zac Gallen looks to be a good pitcher when he is out there. You are going to get 5 INN max per start, with an offense that is in the bottom half of the majors, and a bullpen that is amongst the worst. Picking up wins will be very hard, and while he may be good for your ERA and WHIP. One guy who throws 5 INN per start, or 100 pitches (Never thrown 100 pitches in a game), whatever comes first, WILL HAVE ZERO IMPACT on your Fantasy Baseball Rotation.
Most important of all. If your Fantasy Baseball League is one that has a Playoffs and Championship, good chance you will not even have him on your roster for when it matters the most.
