Fantasy Football Strategy Special:

If You Like It Put A Ring On It

By Muntradamus

BEAST DOME NATION.

The first strategy special article I put out was TDs A Make Them Dance.  This week, and the upcoming weeks I will be giving you strategy to win your leagues as opposed to just week-by-week advice.  This week, I am putting the emphasis on a running back who should be owned in more leagues than he currently is.  Kevin Smith.

Many of you found MaddenArena last season based on my odd prediction to add Kevin Smith days before his huge outbreak against Carolina.  Here is why it is time to add Kevin Smith again if your team is desperate for a RB option.

ADD: KEVIN SMITH

Below you will read all the reasons in why it is time to add the 4th-5th round pick back to your fantasy team before it is too late.  My opening Statement.

KEVIN SMITH makes the Lions a much more dynamic football team with his explosiveness  and ability to be such a great receiver out of the backfield.  Not only did the Lions score over 40 Points twice in his 5 games as the running back, despite ankle problems.  He made Matt Stafford a better QB.

MIKEL LESHOURE

Leshoure came onto the scene strong with an easy 100+ Total Yard game against one of the worst defenses in the Titans.  After that game, he has failed to reach 100 Total Yards, and he lost two fumbles in that span.  The one against the Bears last Monday Night was crucial as the team only lost by one possession, his fumble happened in the Bears Red Zone.

JOIQUE BELL

Bell has looked good in the passing game as a receiving back, but his abilities as a running back is limited.  The Lions are much more dynamic with Kevin Smith as their 3rd down back than Joique.  After his crucial fumble on Monday Night Football on the 1 Yard Line, you have to think his time is coming to an end.

Here is the Lions upcoming schedule.

Week 8: VS. SEA

The Seahawks are one of the best defenses in the NFL.  Mikel Leshoure and Joique Bell will probably end up getting another chance for redemption.  If they defy the odds and both put up big games, then this whole plan can be thrown out the window.  I do not see it happening though as the Lions passing game is sure to have problems.

WEEK 9: @ JAX

Great matchup.  If Leshoure and Bell are the guys, they should get their points.  However there may be changes made if both players struggle in the game against the Seahawks in Week 8, leaving Kevin Smith with a lot of room to shine and re-claim his old role.

WEEK 10: @ MIN

Minnesota is having trouble with shifty backs.  After both Bell and Leshoure failed to do anything against the Vikings earlier this season, it would be very hard pressed to see coach Schwartz not go to his main man Kevin Smith in this battle.

WEEK 11: VS. GB

By this point the Lions will know if their season has a chance.  If the team is still in the playoff hunt, and Leshoure/Bell combo is working for them, then this strategy is likely done.  However if the team continues it’s 2-4 ways to this point and is now 3-7 or worse heading into this matchup.  Kevin Smith would be great if he got the start.

Plus most importantly.  This will solve the Matt Stafford Crisis all of his fantasy owners are going with.

MATT STAFFORD AVERAGES W/ KEVIN SMITH 2011

375.66 Yards. 3.33 TDs. 6 Games

MATT STAFFORD AVERAGES W/O KEVIN SMITH 2011

278.4 Yards. 2.10 TDs. 10 Games

CONCLUSION:

This is a 4 week plan.  Do not give up on it quickly, it has the potential to leave you with a 5th Round RB to close out your season.  If you have a weak RB such as Peyton Hillis on your roster, or Phillip Tanner.  Kevin Smith is a huge upgrade forward, and a gamble worth taking.

  1. Hey Munts,

great info, I picked up Kevin about 2 weeks ago in one of my IDP leagues. Did it just on a whim, and here you are writing about it. Here’s the kicker, today I dropped him for Dwyer. I’ll go back and grab him as soon as the WW lets me. I just knew it, as soon as I make a move, you throw the proverbial high heel in the mix, lol. I guess I’m learning to look ahead.

  2. Hey Munt, thanks for the retweet last sunday. Mike Williams had the looks in the endzone but just couldn’t get a score. Much better this week.

Anyways, I had kevin Smith beginning of the year, dropped him for Quizz. I want him back but who is a good drop for him, Daryl Richardson or Jacquizz Rodgers?

  3. Michael bush or Brandon bolden or Kevin smith? Only one roster open. I have DMC, turner, leshoure, mendenhall.

  4. Thoughts on D’Angelo Williams…. Word is he’s on the block. If he lands in a good situation does he have anything left to matter this season?

  5. Dont have roster spot. Gonna wait till the game after Jax. I have a feeling both backs wont do much against Seattle, but the coaching staff would sum it up to a great Seattle defense. Jax will be the telling story. If Leshoure/Bell do good then theyre gonna ride them. If not, Im sure Smith wont be a huge demand in WW unless one of the two gets hurt.

  6. Just picked up Kevin smith by dropping Michael bush.
    Here’s my roster:
Drew Brees (traded big Ben and cj2k)
    RB DMC
    RB Michael turner
    WR Julio jones
    WR Reggie Wayne
    WR Vincent Jackson
    Flex Randall Cobb
    TE gronkowski
D/ST Vikings /Broncos/ chargers this week
    K Walsh
    Bench
    Luck
Leshoure/ Mendenhall/ Bolden/ Kevin Smith. How can I improve my roster????

  7. D-Rich is a Munt Beast this week. I think youll br able yo grab Quizz next week witg ease assuming Turner isnt injured this weekend.

  8. You don’t need so many defenses. I would drop Vikings and Broncos and pick up some upside players.

  9. drop rodgers for sure..richardson is good man. he splits carries with jackson now..could take over as lead back before the season is over..jackson bout to be gone. richardson is way more explosive

  10. Gonna rid myself of green-ellis, he needs to go, and get Smith. I got a feeling he will be in the game this week.

  11. Great job i love your site
In a non-ppr i have V.Ballard and R.Jennings starting due to injury and bye week but i can pick up J.Dwyer from ww should i get him and drop Ballard since Brown will be playing this week?
Thanks for the help and keep up the super job.

  12. I have leshoure, mcgahee, and Starks. League limit is 3 rbs…. Should I drop leshoure or Starks for smith going forward?

  13. Love the site Munt!!
In a pickle, what do you think? (PPR)
    RB: Gore, Morris, Johnson

    WR: Welker, Colston,Nicks,Bowe

    Can only start 2RB, 2WR, 1Flex

  14. RBs:Gore, Johnson (CJ?)
    WR:Welker, Colston
    Flex:Morris

I like RBs and u have all that are workhorses for their and can catch for PPR.
Like Welker in PPR and Colston and Brees been heating up and great match up in primetime. Nicks isnt 100% yet and Dallas secondary is good. Bowe is a coin flip.

  15. drop starks, gb dont have faith in any of their backs really..alex green is struggling too..struggles with pass protection. gb said yesterday they not happy with the running game right now

  16. Hope so! I really need a solid flex starter. I have Dwyer, but can’t rely on him when Mendenhall comes back. That is a interesting situation too in Pittsburgh.

  17. Munt, where is this K.Smith thing at the moment? I have Smith, but I’m about to put waiver claim for J.Bell and see what happens. LeShaure seems to be a little bit banged up. Smith was on the field against Seattle when LeShaure was on the bench last quarter. They say that they wen’t “hot hand” in this game and therefore Bell got 10 touches more than LeShaure, but I don’t know……..LeShaure was seen limping in the sideline.
